Treasure Island, four miles of wide, soft-sand beaches is located on the south side of John's Pass. The City of Treasure Island, 1.3 square miles in size, has grown from a population of 320 in 1940 to 8,700 in 2000. In the 1950's, a plan was formulated to consolidate many of the established small towns into one large community. This eventually led to the incorporation of Treasure Island in 1955. Developers visualized the creation of man-made landmasses with luxury homes on them. Those dreams were realized when the Corps of Engineers created the Isle of Capri, Isle of Palms and Paradise Island - all part of Treasure Island today. The finger landfills became a building technique applied to most of the shoreline communities found throughout Pinellas County, enabling homebuyers more waterfront choices than ever before. Treasure Island has a complete range of public services including a park and recreation department, a community center and a city transit system. This distinctive beach community offers everything from gulf front beach bars, casual seafood cafes, fine restaurants, local artist's shops, various boutiques and fine hotels. In addition, this community's unique features include a mile long sidewalk on the beach and a public boardwalk along Sunset Beach at the southern tip of Treasure Island where one can linger over glorious sunsets as each day is celebrated by a magnificent display of color. |
